How long is the program?

The program is two years in length and is generally taken as a fulltime student. However, there are part-time students in the programs and custom arrangements can be made to fit those people whose schedule is not easily accommodated in fulltime study.

How much does the program cost?

The 2008-09 program costs are approximately:

  • $3716.50/semester - tuition
  • $405-43/Semester II/III - field experience fees
  • Other expenses for books, supplies and mandatory fees

What does the program prepare me for?

The Education After-Degree Program prepares all students to teach the Alberta Program of Studies in elementary schools across Canada and internationally. On completion of our program you will be well prepared to assume leadership responsibility of an elementary classroom and will be able to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and attributes as required by Alberta Learning for interim certification.

What are class sizes like?

Our classes are quite similar to classes typically found in schools in Alberta. Our education program reflects the practices and dispositions found in most current, professional elementary schools. We model effective teaching and assessment practices in small groups of approximately 35 students.

Who are the professors?

The professors in the after degree program at Concordia University College each have their PhD in a particular area of expertise. All professors also have permanent certification with Alberta Learning and have taught in Alberta schools. You can view faculty information here.

The After-Degree Education program at Concordia has been recognized by Alberta Learning as an alternative teacher education program that is acknowledged for its thorough preparation of teachers in planning, practice teaching, and general knowledge of content.

Can I specialize my program?

Our program is primarily focused on two thorough years of preparation to teach in an elementary school. Areas of specialization are integrated within the program. While there is some room for scheduling customization, the program is organized to ensure that all students are well prepared for teaching in K-12 schools.

Can I transfer courses from another university to Concordia?

Yes. Up to nine credits of coursework may be eligible for transfer credit with consent of the department. This is decided on a one-on-one basis in a personal interview.
